The other day a question about species taxonomy came up. (I wasn't hanging out with evolutionary biologists this time; it was related to a crossword puzzle entry.) The question had to do with subdivisions, and I trotted out the handy mnemonics to remember them:
King Philip Came Over For Good Sex
King Philip Came Over For Good Soup
King Philip, Come Out For Goodness Sake
Kindly Pay Cash Or Furnish Good Security
The letters specify: Kingdom, Phylum, Class, Order, Family, Genus, and Species.
Another variant is:
Kindly Place Cover On Fresh, Green, Spicy Vegetables
Since the "Vegetables" adds "V" for variety, a subdivision of species. Except I don't think kings, like children, eat their vegetables, spicy or otherwise.
Of course, now that the biologists went and added "domain" it doesn't work anymore. We now have: domain archea for peculiar — and evolutionarily ancient — bacteria, like thermophiles; domain eukarya for cells with a nucleus (Protista, Fungi, Plantae, Animalia); and domain eubacteria for true bacteria. Damn biologists! Well, it's easily fixed:
Demented King Philip Came Over For Good Sex
Works for me. Except who has sex with demented kings? Oh, right. Everyone. It's good to be the king.
